Yesterday I was pushing a man in a wheelchair. He has dementia. We are trying to assist him with finding the proper care. But first, we had to renew his identification documentation since he has lost all of it.

It was stressful. Him half asleep in the wheelchair, mumbling non-stop, and me praying that he will just stay awake to be able to make his signature on all the forms that need to be signed.

First, the wheelchair didn’t fit through the door opening, then the wheelchair didn’t fit into the photo booth where his photo was supposed to be taken. He was too heavy for me to lift out of the wheelchair. And because of Covid, no one would step closer to help. I was so close to tears.

But then beauty appeared! A young man with a friendly voice, comforting us, moving chairs, maneuvering the wheelchair, and keeping the dementia patient’s head up while taking the photo.

And then he was gone again. But that was enough. It gave me the strength I needed and we got done what we came to do.

If you keep on looking you will find beauty in every situation. It might not be something, WOW!, but it is there. It is always enough. And it is always exactly what we needed.

Maybe you just desperately need a little bit of extra time to get all your work done … and then a friend calls to ask if she can pick up the kids for a playdate. Maybe your child didn’t pack the dishwasher again last night … but then you find your favorite coffee mug in the cupboard. Maybe your house feels like a mess and you just cannot see how you are ever going to get through it, but then you find that missing top that you have been so sad about.

These are small things … but it is all beauty hidden in everyday life. It makes it all worth it. So keep on looking.

Have you experienced some hidden beauty lately?
